Initial cost of GCC power grid estimated at $1.1bn - 5/23/2009
Cost of the mega GCC power grid is tentatively estimated at $1.1 billion.
This was announced by the head of the maintenance and operation at the GCC’s electric linkage authority, Ahmad Al-Ibrahim, who revealed here Wednesday that the estimated figures for the initial contracts to launch the joint GCC electric linkage project would cost about $1.1 billion. Addressing a lecture at Kuwaiti University, Al-Ibrahim, a Bahraini national, said that the project must first establish seven power stations with a capacity to generate 400,000 megawatts for each, revealing that the first components of the plan began at Al-Zour power-station in Kuwait which has about three generators with the capacity of 600,000 megawatts.
Meanwhile, the eighth meeting of the Council of Arab Electricity Ministers kicked off in Cairo on Wednesday, headed by Iraqi Electricity Minister Kareem Waheed Hassan. Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, in a speech delivered on his behalf by his Assistant for Economic Affairs Ambassador Mohammad Al-Tuwaijri, underscored the importance of placing an executive program to implement resolutions of the Arab Economic Summit held in Kuwait earlier in the year, especially in the electricity sector. In the meantime, Arab power officials called on Arab states on Wednesday to offer technical and material assistance to the administration in Gaza for rebuilding the war-damaged electric infrastructure.
The call came at the conclusion of the eighth meeting of the Council of Arab Electricity Ministers that kicked off in Cairo earlier on Wednesday, under chairmanship of Iraqi Electricity Minister Kareem Waheed Hassan. The ministers, in the conclusion statement, urged Arab governments to offer technical and material aid to the administration in the strip to rebuild the power network and the Gazan thermal power station, as well as boosting its productivity. They also urged the Gazan authorities to specify the forms of assistance needed to repair the network.
